Are templates ATS friendly?

Understand how layout decisions affect ATS parsing and human readability in 2026 hiring.

ATS compatibility is still a real constraint, but it is often misunderstood. Modern systems in 2025 and 2026 handle more structure than older ones, yet avoidable formatting mistakes still cause data loss. This guide explains what is safe, risky, and role-dependent.

What makes a resume ATS friendly

  • Standard section headings that the system can identify (Experience, Education, Skills).
  • Clean text without tables, text boxes, or complex column layouts that confuse parsers.
  • Standard fonts that embed correctly in PDF.
  • No images in the main content area (profile photos in a header are generally fine).

Which templates are safe for ATS

Single-column and simple two-column templates are the safest. Templates like London, Dublin, Berlin, Paris, Helsinki, and Zurich are structured in a way that parses reliably across most ATS platforms.

Heavy creative layouts, full-dark backgrounds, and templates with decorative elements are better for portfolio submissions or industries where ATS is not commonly used (design, creative, media).

The ATS-ready badge

Templates marked with the ATS-ready badge in the template selection screen have been tested against common parsing criteria. When in doubt, choose one of these for corporate applications.

Even an ATS-friendly template will not save a resume that lacks the keywords from the job description. Make sure your experience and skills section mirrors the language used in the role requirements.
